Our bedroom remodel journey, transforming from a coastal vibe to a moody sanctuary, has been an exciting design adventure. We aimed to create an intimate, sophisticated, and cozy space, one that completely departs from the bright and breezy feel of coastal decor. Here’s how we achieved this transformation, step by step.

Paint
The color we used for the entire primary suite is Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray in a satin finish.
Dark Floral Wallpaper Mural
The transformation began with a bold statement: a dark floral wallpaper mural installed by David Koon Inc. This dramatic backdrop set the tone for the entire room, adding depth and a touch of romantic elegance. The mural’s rich, dark hues immediately made the space feel more intimate and luxurious.

Canopy Bed
The Calistoga Canopy Bed, in dusty charcoal, is the centerpiece of the bedroom’s furniture. Its commanding presence and sleek lines perfectly complement the dark floral mural, creating a cohesive and inviting focal point. The bed’s canopy adds a sense of grandeur and sophistication, making it a statement piece.
Built-In Bookshelves
One of my favorite additions to the room is the built-in bookshelves. They provide a stylish and practical storage solution for my wife’s book collection and decorative items, adding personality and charm to the space. Custom Woodworks Plus did a fantastic job with these.

Velvet Upholstered Armchair
For a cozy reading nook, we added a reddish-brown, velvet-upholstered armchair. The rich, warm tone of the chair adds a pop of color and contrasts beautifully with the room’s dark elements. It’s the perfect spot for my wife to curl up with a book and unwind.
Writing Desk and Barrel Chair
A black writing desk with gold legs, paired beautifully with a cream-upholstered barrel chair, creates a stylish and practical workspace for my wife. The desk’s gold legs mirror the accents on the dresser and nightstands, tying the room’s design elements together.

Black Dresser and Nightstands
To maintain the room’s cohesive look, we selected a black dresser and matching nightstands, each featuring stylish gold accents. These pieces add a modern touch and provide ample storage, ensuring the room remains stylish and functional.
Antique Brass Table Lamps
Lighting is crucial in setting the mood, and the antique brass table lamps we chose don’t disappoint. Their warm glow and classic design add a touch of vintage charm, enhancing the room’s overall ambiance.

Black and Grey Abstract Rug
To ground the space, we selected a black and grey abstract rug. Its contemporary design adds texture and interest to the floor, while the monochromatic palette perfectly complements the room’s color scheme.
Bedroom Sound System
For an immersive audio experience, we installed two 8″ Klipsch ceiling speakers and a 10″ Jamo contemporary subwoofer hidden in the closet. The bedroom is integrated with my whole-house audio system. Whether watching a movie or listening to music, the sound quality is incredible, enhancing the room’s overall atmosphere.

Bedroom Entertainment
We mounted a 65″ LG OLED TV on the wall to complete the entertainment setup and connected it to an Apple TV 4K. This combination offers stunning visuals and a seamless streaming experience, ideal for movie nights or binge-watching your favorite shows.

Bedroom Smart Controls
Smart home technology enhances convenience and control in our bedrooms. With Lutron Caseta dimmer and fan switches, we can easily adjust the lighting and fan speed to create the perfect ambiance and enable automation. The multiple dimmers allowed for easy customization of lighting scenes. An Amazon Echo Show 5 enables voice control, making it effortless to manage all the smart devices in the room and throughout the house.
Ceiling Fan Blades
To ensure that every detail matched the dark and moody aesthetic, I spray-painted the ceiling fan blades satin black. This small change made a big difference, tying the room together and adding a sleek, modern touch.
Greenery
Finally, we added a faux olive tree in the corner of the room. This brought a touch of greenery and life to the space without disrupting the dark and moody theme.

Final Thoughts
Transforming our bedroom from a coastal vibe to dark and moody was rewarding. By combining creative design choices, stylish materials, and smart technology, an elegant and inviting space has been created. Whether relaxing with a book, enjoying a movie, or simply unwinding after a long day, our updated bedroom is the perfect sanctuary.
