One of the first things I installed in my current home was the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. I’ve had it for over a year now and love it. I loved it so much I ended up adding Ring’s Floodlight Cam and Spotlight Cam.

In addition to this being a great camera and security tool, you can create custom motion zones that will trigger recordings and alerts.
I took the motion zone feature a step further and used it to trigger exterior lights at night via SmartThings and Lutron Caseta. For example, when someone approaches the front door, the recording will begin, and the front porch light will turn on.
Another interesting feature I like about this video doorbell is the ability to turn off our mechanical doorbell and just rely on the app notification. This comes in handy when the baby (or me) is taking a nap.
One thing I did differently with my install was to use a third-party 45-degree angled mounting box. I think this gives me a better view than the stock wedges would have given me. It came primed, so painting it was a breeze.
